If you are more of a DIY person, consider your options, but first, What kind of satellite do you want to launch?

Find out what it is you want to observe, measure, or accomplish with the satellite.  This will determine the functionality and necessary components with which you will incorporate into it’s design.

Many people have successfully launched cell phones into orbit as they contain all the components in a compact and convenient space already.  This is neat if you want to track the experience from beginning to end.

There are at least 7 types of Satellites orbiting the Earth:

Group name / Mass (kg) / general orbit

  1. Large satellite >1000 /
  2. Medium satellite 500 to 1000
  3. Mini satellite 100 to 500
  4. Micro satellite 10 to 100
  5. Nano satellite 1 to 10
  6. Pico satellite 0.1 to 1
  7. Femto satellite <0.1

How long do these satellites last?
