Did you know the first astronauts weren’t even human? They were flies and other insects, but when it came to mammals, we sent our best…friends, dogs. An adopted stray named Laika, a siberian husky mix, became the first dog launched on the second satellite into space, Sputnik 2, which unfortunately for Laika, had no re-entry plan in time. RIP Laika.
On a lighter note, in 1960, the former Soviet Union was able to successfully send two dogs, Belka and Strelka, into orbit upon the Sputnik 5, with a safe return.
I’m still curious as to whether the harness used to strap these brave souls in the rocket would qualify as a modern-day thundershirt?
